FAQ
Answers to common diesel generator questions: what size you need, kVA vs kW, standby vs prime power, silent vs open sets and delivery.
Add up the power of everything you want to run at the same time, then allow extra for motors and pumps, which draw more when they start. If you're not sure, send us an enquiry with what you want to power and we'll size it for you.
kVA is the total power a generator produces; kW is the usable power. For most three-phase diesel generators, kW is roughly kVA × 0.8. So a 100 kVA generator gives about 80 kW.
Standby power is the maximum the generator can give during a power cut, for limited hours. Prime power is what it can supply continuously, for unlimited hours with a varying load. Prime is always a bit lower than standby.
Silent generators sit in an acoustic canopy that cuts noise and protects against weather, so they suit outdoor sites, offices and homes. Open generators are cheaper and suit plant rooms or containers where the building handles noise.
Most homes and small sites in the UK use single phase. Commercial and industrial sites usually use three phase. Check your supply, or ask us.
